Checklist for selecting an Executive Search Firm
Admittedly we may have a biased opinion here but….
Ask probing questions prior to engaging with an executive search firm to ensure that they came prepared to win your business. Are they fully versed in your company, its history, industry, competitive pressures, stage of growth? Did they ask how business is going? Is the company having a good year? If yes - why? If no - why not? Did you feel that they were sincerely invested?
Employer Branding-evaluate the style and professionalism of the team that will be handling your company's search. The executive search team will be contacting top executives in the market on your company’s behalf so make sure you agree with their communication style and approach. Are they articulate, accurate and compelling storytellers? Do they engender trust? Can you see them acting as your company’s cultural ambassador?
Seek their professional counsel-ask the firm their opinion of the position you are looking to fill including the title, location and compensation package. Gauge their enthusiasm, confidence and feedback.
Ask the executive search firm to provide examples of search work that demonstrates creatives candidate research-not just recruiting the usual suspects. Top talent is always in high demand so you need a team that is creative at developing a slate of compelling candidates that expand your scope.
Quality over quantity. Ask about the search process and timelines for deliverables. Stress the need for quality candidates over quantity. Few people have countless hours to spend interviewing unqualified candidates or reading voluminous weekly executive search candidate reports.
Select an executive search team that you enjoy speaking with and trust to provide honest advice and feedback from the market. This process should be energizing and motivating!
